For a manufacturer of exotic metallic alloys we designed a custom closed-loop quench system that would rapidly cool the incoming product using a quiescent water bath. The device featured a coaxial pipe assembly, the innermost of which was fed by a pump from a reservoir of water that would merely maintain a level above that above the product to ensure constant contact. As the inner chamber overflowed, it spilled into the outer chamber which cleanly and safely captured the efluent, and directed it to the reservoir for reuse. The design called for commercially available off-the-shelf hardware (stainless steel pipe and fittings, mostly) which minimized the fabrication cost by avoiding the use whenever possible of custom machined hardware.
