LASER MEASURING SYSTEM
For a manufacturer of exotic metallic alloys, we designed a custom laser measuring system that would, in real-time, gauge the size of a milled wire product to 50-millionths inch (0.000050") accuracy. The system consisted of a 2-axis laser micrometer through which the product would pass as it was guided by precision pulleys on either side of the laser device. The key component of this system was the worm-type calibration mechanism that would allow the user to correctly align the laser such that it was square with respect to the product. These components were all mounted to a relatively thick, rigid, and flat backplate which in turn was supported by a rigid stand, all of which acted in unison to provide a stable platform that inhibited the introduction of external vibrations, thereby ensuring the measurement accuracy of the system.
